COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The BYU men's and women's track and field teams are in first place heading into the final day of competition at the inaugural Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the Air Force Academy. Friday's action consisted of event finals, as well as qualifying for tomorrow's finals.

The BYU men stand in first with 66 points, 14 better than second-place Wyoming. Colorado State is in third with 50, followed by Air Force (41), Utah (16) and New Mexico (6). On the women's side, the Cougars have 75.5 points and have a sizable lead over second-place Wyoming (40). San Diego State is in third with 36, followed by Colorado State (25), UNLV (24.50), Utah (16), Air Force (9) and New Mexico (8).

In the women's 5,000 Meter Run, BYU took the top two spots with seniors Marty Hernandez (17:33.65) and Kara Ormond (17:45.67). Utah junior Johanna Nielson finished third with a time of 17:54.74. On the men's side, Utah senior Travis Hildebrand's final-lap kick earned him first-place with a time of 15:09.29. Wyoming senior Joe Hall finished second at 15:09.77 and BYU junior John Hedengren captured third with a time of 15:32.56.

In the Men's Distance Medley Relay, Colorado State took first with a time of 10:24.54, followed by Air Force (10:27.91) and Utah (10:33.44). For the women, BYU captured first by almost 16 seconds with a time of 12:22.83. Colorado State claimed second at 12:38.80, followed by UNLV at 12:47.25.

The Women's Pole Vault title was earned by BYU sophomore Sara Higham with a mark of 3.75 meters. Four other athletes, San Diego State's Aimee Crabtree and Kristi Draher, Colorado State's Jamie Davies and Air Force's Ana-Marie Ortega, finished behind Higham with a height of 3.65 meters.

In the Men's Long Jump competition, Wyoming sophomore Mervin Swaby soared to first-place with a leap of 7.60 meters. Air Force senior Anthony Jones finished with the silver with a mark of 7.06 meters, followed by BYU senior Kyle Grossarth at 7.02 meters. The women's competition was swept by BYU with senior Kirstin Bolm taking first with a jump of 6.47 meters. Junior Kristel Berendsen followed with a distance of 5.82 meters and freshman Anna-Lee Walcott took third with 5.81 meters.

The Weight Throw finals were dominated by the University of Wyoming. Junior Jason Gervais and Jason Hammond took first and second on the men's side, respectively. Gervais earned first with a throw of 22.60 meters, while Hammond had a mark of 20.26 meters. BYU junior Jim Roberts finished third at 18.40 meters. The top six spots in the women's competition belonged to the Cowgirls. Ranked number one in the nation, senior Robin Lyons cruised to first with a distance of 21.62 meters. Senior Dana Dillon followed at 18.95 meters and sophomore Julie Thomas finished third with a mark of 18.82 meters.

In the Men's High Jump, BYU senior Marc Chenn towered over the field with a mark of 2.16 meters. Air Force senior Dave Klein and BYU junior Shae Taylor followed with efforts of 2.02 meters.

The championships conclude tomorrow at the Air Force Academy with a 12:30 p.m. start time.
