BYU's Hansen and Gulledge and UNLV's Yates Named Mtn. West Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

BYU duo shares pole vault crown at Air Force Invite, while Yates shines in pentathlon. (2/1)

Feb. 1, 2000

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU junior Jeff Hansen and senior Allan Gulledge and UNLV freshman Chantel Yates were named Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their performances last week. Hansen and Gulledge share the honor for the Cougars.

Competing at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., Jan. 28-29, Hansen and Gulledge shared the pole vault title with identical heights of 17' 9". The mark also provisionally qualified the duo for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Hansen, a native of Parma, Idaho, was an All-American last season after finishing fifth in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. This past weekend's vault was a season-high. Gulledge set a new career-high with his performance. The height of 17'9" is more than a foot higher than any other vault in the Mountain West Conference this season.

A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Yates finished third in the pentathlon, fourth in the 60-meter hurdles and 12th in the long jump at the Air Force Invitational, Jan. 28-29. Her score of 3,322 in the pentathlon is a league-high for the season. She defeated five conference foes in the event. Her time of 9.20 in the 60-meter hurdles ranks eighth in the conference this year, while her mark of 17' 2" in the long jump ranks ninth. All three marks were career-highs for the first-year athlete.

Last week's winners: Wyoming's Joe Hall & Robin Lyons
