Mountain West Conference Names Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

Wyoming's Jake Shanklin and UNLV's Lekeisha Lawson earn the awards

Jan. 22, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming junior Jake Shanklin and UNLV junior Lekeisha Lawson have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men's and women's indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively.

Shanklin earns the honor after securing the 35-pound weight throw title at the Holiday Inn Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska and held in Lincoln, Neb., last weekend. The Ellensburg, Wash., product, threw a toss of 67-01.50, which was good enough to earn NCAA provisional qualifier status. His toss currently ranks fifth in the nation, according to TrackShark.com, and is first in the league this season. Shanklin threw against a field of twenty individuals, including four belonging to the No. 12 preseason-ranked Nebraska.

On the women's side, Lawson led the UNLV Rebels at the Northern Arizona Lumberjack Invitational last weekend, which was held in Flagstaff, Ariz. The sprinter took the 200-meter title with a 24.91 performance, which was her career-best indoor time in the event. She went on to secure third-place in the 60-meter with a time of 7.58, and ran a leg on the Rebels' 1600-meter relay team, which also took third clocking a time of 4:05.60. Lawson's 60-meter time is currently tied for second in the Conference this season while her 200-meter performance ranks sixth. A total of five teams competed in the meet, including league members BYU (No. 22 preseason) and New Mexico.

This marks Shanklin's second career honor and Lawson's first.
