LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Wyoming men's and women's track and field teams are each ranked #14 in the country in the latest Trackwire poll.

The Cowgirls had the same number of points they had in the poll last week, but fell from #12. The women are tied with Georgia, Villanova and UTEP. Only one other Mountain West Conference team is ranked, Brigham Young.

Wyoming is led by senior Robin Lyons, who has the top throw in the country in the 20-pound weight. Lyons is followed by NCAA provisional qualifiers Dana Dillon and Julie Thomas in the 20-pound weight throw to give the Cowgirls a very talented throwing crew.

Adelaide Harper broke the school record in the 200-meter dash this past weekend at the Air Force All-Comers meet. With a time of 24.50, Harper broke the previous school record of 24.72, held since 1992 by Trecia Roberts.

The Cowboys, who weren't ranked last week, made their debut at #14. Tied at #14 with Wyoming is Georgia. The Pokes jumped right into the polls on the heels of some strong performances this past weekend at Air Force. Junior Jason Gervais set the school record in the shot put with a throw of 63' 1 1/4". That mark also automatically qualifies Gervais for the NCAA Indoor Championships, where he is also an automatic qualifier in the 35-pound weight throw.

Junior thrower Derek Woodske was also strong in Colorado Springs, with a mark of 69' 7 1/2" in the 35-pound weight throw. Woodske is coming back from an injury, and has showed that he can still perform at an elite level. The Pokes will be looking to move up in the rankings with Jason Hammond (throws), Mervin Swaby (jumps) and Quincy Howe (jumps) all performing well.

"The men competed this past weekend with some added intensity," said Larry Judge, head track and field coach. "They deserve this recognition. Being ranked 14th is more indicative of the talent we have. Gervais' mark in the shot put and Derek Woodske’s performance both helped.

"We still have some others who can help with our scoring," said Judge. "Quincy Howe, Jason Hammond and Mervin Swaby can all eventually contribute. We are really excited about being ranked 14th on both the men's and women's sides and about the direction of our program. We just need to keep on improving each week."

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will be back in action this weekend, when they host the Wyoming Open on Friday and the Cowboy/Cowgirl Classic on Saturday. Action begins at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Both meets will take place in War Memorial Fieldhouse. Air Force and Colorado State will both be in town for the Cowboy/Cowgirl Classic, a three-way scored meet.
