SACRAMENTO, Calif. -

University of Wyoming track and field standout Shauna Smith advanced to the finals of the women's 400 meter hurdles at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Saturday in Sacramento, Calif.

Smith, a native of Sheridan, Wyo., turned in the sixth best time of the day with performance of 55.51 seconds to qualify for the finals of the event, which is scheduled for Sunday at 5:15 p.m. (MST). Lashinda Demus of South Carolina ran to a first place finish time of 53.70 seconds followed by Sandra Glover of Nike, 53.78 seconds.

On Friday, Smith posted the fifth best time in the quarterfinals with a career best performance of 55.23 seconds, which sets a new UW and MWC record.

Smith must finish in the top three in the finals in order to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team and a trip to the e 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
