Gonzales Finishes 11th at USA Championships Sophomore concludes season.
June 23, 2003
STANFORD, Calif. - University of New Mexico sophomore Matt Gonzales wrapped up his sensational six-month track season with an 11th place finish in the 10,000 at the USA Track and Field Championships at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Gonzales crossed the line with a time of 28:48.21. Alan Culpepper recaptured the national 10K title with a winning time of 27:55.36. Gonzales was running his second 10,000-meter race in seven days after earning All-America honors with his third place finish at the NCAA Championships on June 12. The grueling physical task took its toll somewhat on the Santa Fe native, as he ran his slowest time of the season.
The 5-5 Gonzales was running his 14th race since the 2003 track
season began with indoor competition on Jan. 24. He will return
for his final cross country season this fall to help lead a talented,
veteran New Mexico men's squad up the national rankings.
