LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming track and field program saw two of its athletes compete on day one of the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. on Wednesday.

Sophomore Shauna Smith took the spotlight for UW by winning her heat of the 400 meter hurdles. The Sheridan, Wyo. native broke her own school record in the event for the second time in less than a month clocking in at 57.31. Her time ranked second on the day and advances her to the semifinals on Thursday.

"Shauna looked really good today," said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. "We are all very excited too see her race tomorrow in the semifinals."

John Griffith closed out his Cowboy career by finishing the day 22nd in the hammer throw. Also a native of Sheridan, Griffith recorded a mark of 190' 10.5", his second best throw of the year.

"John came into the championships seeded 27th and he stepped up and made a really nice throw that placed him 22nd. He did a great job this season and will be sorely missed next year."

Action continues for UW at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. on Thursday as sophomore Jessica Fox competes in the first round of the 400 meter dash, senior Quincy Howe jumps in the qualifying round of the triple jump and Shauna Smith runs in the semifinals of the 400 meter hurdles.
