AUSTIN, Texas - Wyoming junior Shauna Smith set a new Cowgirl and Mountain West Conference record in the prelim's of the 400 meter hurdles, Friday at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas.

Smith, a native of Sheridan, Wyo., recorded the fifth fastest time of the day clocking in at 55.63 seconds. She advances to the finals of the event, scheduled for Saturday at 6:40 p.m, for the second straight season. Raasin McIntosh of Texas ranked first with a time of 55.39 seconds.

"Shauna (Smith) ran a great race," said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. "She got off to a slow start, but really turned it on at the end. She is beaming with confidence right now and is ready to lace 'em up tomorrow."

Also on Friday, junior Jessica Fox closed out her season with a 17th place finish in preliminaries of the 400 meter dash. Fox, a Burns, Wyo. native, crossed the finish line in 53.59 seconds. She was seeded 21st heading into the event.

The 2004 NCAA Track and Field Championships concludes Saturday at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.
