Records Fall as Rams Compete at NCAA Outdoor Lohse, Smith, and Woods qualify for finals.

AUSTIN, Texas - After getting rained out yesterday, the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship was back on schedule today at the University of Texas. Junior Loree Smith, one of the favorites in the hammer throw, qualified for the finals, as did freshman Magnus Lohse in the shot put and senior John Woods in the 200 meters. Smith threw 209-4 in the hammer to qualify fourth. She'll compete in the discus Friday at 11:00 a.m. (Central), along with teammate Keela Niemeyer and then will compete in the finals of the hammer at 1:00 p.m. Sophomore Haley Hunt, also competing in the hammer throw, finished 23rd with her toss of 182-1 and did not advance to the finals. Lohse, who qualified in ninth spot with his throw of 61-2.75, broke the school record for the third time this season, surpassing his previous record of 61-0.25 from the NCAA Regionals. Woods also took the ninth spot in the qualifying, running a 20.55 to grab the last qualifying spot. His time is also a school record, breaking his own of 20.69 from 2002. Lohse will compete in the finals at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Woods will run at 8:25 p.m. Junior Cristina Gourdin placed 25th in the heptathlon with 4,542 points. She ran a 15.29 in the 100 hurdles, high jumped 5-3.75, threw 33-6 in the shot put and closed out the first day with a 26.46 in the 200. Today she had a long jump of 15-4, threw the javelin 107-4 and closed out the championship with a 2:31.13 in the 800 meters.
Junior Mike Nicks failed to qualify in the finals of the steeplechase
after running a 9:15.19 to finish 21st overall. Austin Vigil competed
late in the men's 10,000 meters and results were not available.
