Utah Runner Nellie Hammons Sets New School Record, Misses Qualifying For Day Two Hammons finished 20th in the day one qualifying heat for the 800 meters.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Utah runner Nellie Hammons finished competition for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, June 11. Hosted by Sacramento State University, the meet features all athletes and teams that qualified at the regional meets. Hammons finished 20th in the 800 meter-quarterfinals with a time of 2:06.99. Her performance is not only a new personal record, but also a new school record breaking her old time of 2:07.08. Although she did not qualify for the semifinals, the sophomore distance runner has been one of Utah's most dominating athletes in 2003. "Nellie's performance was the culmination of a great season," states Head Cross Country Coach Brian Appell. "We're looking forward to more great performances from Nellie over the next two years." "It was really great to represent the school at the NCAA Championships," states Hammons. "All the athletes were very competitive and the conditions were excellent.
