SACRAMENTO, Calif. -

University of Wyoming Cowboy sophomore Mark Korir competed in the 5,000-meters at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on Wednesday night.

Korir finished in 11th place in his heat with a time of 14:27.89. He held up with the pack for about half of the race, but two very fast laps during the middle of race separated him from the lead pack. To make the finals, Mark would have had to finish in either the top-four of his heat or have one of the eight fastest times of the nonqualifiers.

"Mark had a great season for us," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "This was a good experience for the young sophomore and I know this will not be his last time at the NCAA Championships."

Wyoming still has one athlete competing in the Championships with Kate Burton in the hammer throw. She will start her qualifying round on Thursday at 10 am.
