June 6, 2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - It was a disappointing evening for University of New Mexico juniors Jarrin Solomon and Ariel Burr as their memorable 2007 season came to an end in the preliminary round of the 400 meters tonight at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Solomon missed the semifinals by a mere one-hundredth of a second, finishing fourth in his heat and 17th overall (47.08). Burr, meanwhile, was 25th in the women's prelims with a time of 54.19.

"I know they're both really upset right now," said head coach Matt Henry. "For Jarrin to miss the semifinals by one spot is especially tough for him, but he finished 17th at the NCAA Championships and that's something we're really proud of. They just didn't run the race they needed to today, but they're still young and have a lot of races left in their careers."

Solomon ran over 47 seconds for just the second time since March 24. The Albuquerque La Cueva grad was one of several 400 runners from the vaunted Midwest Region to struggle on Wednesday. Regional champion Quentin Summers of Baylor (21st) was among the six Midwest runners knocked out during the prelims.

Burr ran her slowest time in six weeks after smashing her own school record with a time of 52.85 two weeks ago at the Midwest Regional Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Senior Timmie Murphy toes the line in the women's 5,000 meters tonight at 10:30 p.m. (Mountain). Sophomore Katie Coronado (javelin) and senior Jeremy Johnson (10,000m) compete tomorrow night.
