SDSU Track and Field Completes Day One Of NCAA Championships Stone competes in 400 meters on opening day of meet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - San Diego State's Nicole Stone (Ontario, Calif.) competed Wednesday in the preliminary round of the 400-meter dash on the first day of action at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The Aztec freshman placed fifth in the third heat with a time of 54.69 seconds, but was unable to advance to the semifinals after finishing 26th overall. "Today was a great learning experience for Nicole," said SDSU assistant coach Jennifer Nanista. "She will benefit tremendously in the future after witnessing the high level of competition here." The NCAA Championships resume on Thursday at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex with two events featuring Aztec student-athletes. Senior Erin Asay (San Diego, Calif.) will compete in the qualifying round of the pole vault, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Asay enters the meet ranked seventh in the nation. Meanwhile, the semifinals of 4x400 relay are scheduled to commence at 6:30 p.m. The SDSU quartet of Stone, senior Larnie Boyd (Vallejo, Calif.) and sophomores Sherraine Pencil (Toronto, Canada) and Brittani Dudley (Oakland, Calif.) is seeded 20th in the race.
