Wyoming's Gervais and Batt Earn All-America Honors at NCAA Meet The honor is the seventh of Gervais' UW career.
June 1, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming senior Jason Gervais finished seventh in the discus, while freshman Andrea Batt placed fifth in the javelin on Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., earning them both All-America honors. Gervais had a throw of 191'11", placing him in the top eight. The top eight placers in each event earn All-America status. The honor gives Gervais his seventh All-America honor in his Wyoming career. Gervais, from Timmins, Ontario, entered the event seeded fourth with a throw of 201' 9". The winner of the discus was Toga Koseoglu of Texas A&M, who had a throw of 204'10". "It was a frustrating day for Jason," said throw coach Paul Barrett. "The weather conditions weren't ideal, so it made it tough. Despite that he still placed seventh in the competition and is once again an All-American." Batt notched a mark of 167'10" to place fifth in her first NCAA Outdoor Championships. This is the first ever All-America award for Batt. Batt, from Huson, Mont., broke a Mountain West Conference and school record in the javelin with a mark of 168' 8" to enter her event seeded sixth. Inga Stasuilionyte of Southern California won the javelin throw with a mark of 172'4". "Andrea came up huge in this track meet," added Barrett. "She was close to the leaders the entire way, and was less than a foot from the runner-up spot. We're extremely pleased with a freshman coming through like that, and it really shows signs of her potential down the road." "Overall, it was a good weekend for us with three All-Americans. It's unfortunate we lose both Jason Hammond and Jason Gervais, but it was a great way for them to end their careers." The Cowboys currently have three points and the Cowgirls have four points in the competition. Distance runner Joe Hall finished 18th in the 10,000-meter run on
Wednesday and Jason Hammond placed eighth in the hammer throw on
Thursday.
