Life In The Fast Lane Davis and Charles race to NCAA All-American finishes at national meet.
June 1, 2002
BATON ROUGE, La. - It was an All-American day as two UNLV sprinters found the road to glory on the final day of the 2002 NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at Bernie Moore Stadium.
Junior Michele Davis (Lansing, Mich.) earned her third NCAA All-American outdoor honor with a career best, sixth-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 52.16 seconds. Davis shaved more than two tenths of a second off her previous all-time best of 52.37, turned in during Thursday's preliminaries.
Fellow junior Nickeisha Charles (Arima, Trinidad) followed behind in eighth (52.81) for NCAA All-American distinction, the first of her UNLV career. Rice's Allison Beckford won the individual event title with a time of 50.83 seconds. This is the first time in school history that two Rebels have reached the finals and earned All-American honors in the same event at a single national meet.
In the 4x400 meter relay finals, Davis, Charles, sophomore Christine Spence (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and junior Chantel Yates (Chattanooga, Tenn.) placed ninth with a time of 3:34.74. South Carolina, which led the nation in the 4x400 all season long, came out on top with a winning time of 3:26.46. Only the top eight finishers in each event received All-American honors.
UNLV concludes the 2002 outdoor season tied for 45th nationally in team scoring with four points. South Carolina claimed the women's national team title with 82 points, edging out UCLA who finished in second with 72.
