LARAMIE, Wyo. -

University of Wyoming senior Jason Hammond finished eighth Thursday in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., earning All-America honors.

Hammond had a throw of 217-11, placing him in the top eight. The top eight placers in each event earn All-America status. The honor gives Hammond his fourth All-America honor in his UW career. The finish also gives Wyoming one team point, which puts the Cowboys in a tie for 25th place overall.

Hammond, from Fresno, Calif., entered the event seeded tenth with a season-best throw of 221-1. The winner of the hammer throw was Andras Haklits of Georgia who had a throw of 247-8.

"This is an outstanding way for Jason to end his Cowboy career," said Wyoming head coach Don Yentes. "He moved up a couple of notches from where he was seeded to earn All-America status. Jason has worked very hard to reach this level and he performed very well when the pressure was on."

Wyoming has two more individuals who will compete at the championships. Jason Gervais will compete in the discus and Andrea Batt will compete in the javelin on Friday. Distance runner Joe Hall finished 18th in the 10,000-meter run on Wednesday.
