Howe, Griffith, Fox and Smith Qualify for NCAA Championships Fox and Smith surpass own school records.

Lincoln, Neb. (May 31, 2003)-- Four University of Wyoming track and field athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships with their performances Saturday at the 2003 NCAA Midwest Regional in Lincoln, Neb. Cowgirls Jessica Fox and Shauna Smith along with Cowboys John Griffith and Quincy Howe placed in the top five in their respective events to earn a trip to the 2003 NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 11-14. Jessica Fox finished third in the finals of the 400 meter dash breaking her two-week old record with a time of 51.93 to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The sophomore from Burns, Wyo. has now surpassed her own 400 meter record three times this season. Sophomore Shauna Smith earned a trip to Sacramento by placing fourth in the 400 meter hurdles. Smith crossed the finish line in 57.54 breaking her own record she set yesterday. She also placed eighth in the finals of the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.91. Cowboy Quincy Howe earned his third trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with his third place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 52' 5". Howe will now try for All-American honors for the third time in his collegiate career.
John Griffith, a native of Sheridan, Wyo., qualified for the NCAA Championships by throwing a personal best distance of 195' 4" in the hammer throw yesterday. Griffith's fifth place finish was one of the best underdog performances of the meet. "We were confident that at least four of our athletes could earn a trip to the championships," said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. "I am very proud of our efforts at our first regional. We had three school records and many personal records broken this weekend. I think our program is going to be represented very well at the NCAA Championships."
Fox, Smith, Howe and Griffith will compete next at the NCAA Outdoor Track
and Field Championships June 11-14 in Sacramento, Calif.
