PALO ALTO, Calif. - Two members of the UNLV women's track and field team came close to reaching nationals on the first day of the 2003 NCAA Track and Field West Regionals held at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Sophomore sprinter Halima Decree (Bakersfield, Calif.) fell seconds short of qualifying for tomorrow's finals in the women's 100 meter dash with a ninth-place time of 11.78 seconds. Senior Casey Lektorich (Spokane, Wash.) also placed ninth in the finals of the javelin with a distance of 150-03.00 (45.80m).

In the preliminaries of the 100m hurdles, sophomore Miesha McClendon (Pasadena, Calif.) finished 18th with a wind-aided time of 14.01 seconds, a career and season best.

One Rebel competitor remains as senior Tianika Sharrieff (Euless, Texas) prepares for tomorrow's finals in the high jump, which is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.

The top five finishers in each event out of four regional sites around the country will advance to the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 11-14 in Sacramento, Calif.
