BATON ROUGE, La. - UNLV sprinters Nickeisha Charles (Arima, Trinidad) and Michele Davis (Lansing, Mich.) both advanced to the finals of the 400 meters on the second day of the 2002 NCAA Division I Women's Track and Field Championships held Thursday at Bernie Moore Stadium.

In heat one, Charles set a new career and season best in the event with a time of 52.33 seconds, the fourth fastest time of the day. Davis, competing in heat two, also clocked in a career and season best with a time of 52.37 seconds. The two-time NCAA All-American made the final cut for Saturday's finals in eighth.

South Carolina's Demetria Washington led all 20 preliminary qualifiers with a time of 51.51. The top eight finishers in each event will earn All-American honors.

In the preliminaries of the 4x400 meter relay, the Rebels' top foursome of Davis, Charles and sophomore Christine Spence (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and junior Chantel Yates (Chattanooga, Tenn.) moved on to Saturday's finals with an eighth-place and season best time of 3:33.21.

UNLV will not compete in individual events tomorrow, but returns to action on Saturday, June 1, in the finals of the 400 meters at 5:30 p.m. and the finals of the 4x400 meter relay at 7:35 p.m.
