LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Mervin Swaby and Seth Billy wrapped up their 2002 outdoor track and field seasons, on Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, in Baton Rouge, La.

Billy, who competed in the 400-meter hurdles, ran a time of 51.11. His finish didn't place him among the qualifiers to move on to the finals on Friday. Bennie Brazell of LSU had the top time of the day running a 49.57.

A junior from Christ City, Barbados, he entered the event seeded 16th with a time of 50.07. It was a personal best and a new school record that he set earlier this month at the MWC Championships.

"Seth was disappointed that he didn't make the finals," said head track and field coach Don Yentes. "But overall, we were pleased with how he ran and felt he had a very good year."

Swaby, from Kingston, Jaimaca, finished the championships with a mark of 24' 4 1/4" in the long jump. He entered the event ranked 19th with a qualifying mark of 25' 4 3/4", which was a personal best and new school record set earlier this month. Walter Davis of Louisiana State won the event with a jump of 26' 6 1/4".

"Mervin struggled a bit and was disappointed he didn't make the finals," said Yentes. "It was definitely within his reach, he just came up a little short."

"Overall, I'm very pleased and the two young men had a good year," added Yentes. "It's good when you can be finish in the Top 15 in the nation in your event. We're excited to have them both back next year and hopefully we can do better the next time around."
