LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming track and field teams concluded the 2001 outdoor season with a successful final day of competition Saturday in San Diego, Calif., at the Mountain West Conference Championships. UW picked up two more individual conference titles giving the team four conference champions overall at the championships. Senior Jason Hammond won the hammer title with a toss of 214-2, giving him his second consecutive hammer title. Sophomore Seth Billy earned his first ever conference title by winning the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a season best time of 51.31. Overall the Cowboys placed fifth (90 points) out of six teams, just one point out of fourth. BYU won the men's title with 240 points. The Cowgirls battled their way to a fourth-place finish (70 points) out of eight schools. BYU's women also won the conference team title with 229.83 points. As a team Wyoming athletes earned 13 All-Conference honors for their performances. "I was very pleased with the teams efforts today," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "We really had some people step it up and give great performances. The men's team probably scored 20-25 more points than we should have scored so I was extremely happy how they finished. The women really improved upon their finish from the indoor championships which was nice to see. The women had a very solid meet." The Cowboys swept the first three places in the hammer with Hammond winning the event followed by senior Derek Woodske in second (197-8) and senior Jason Gervais in third (192-9). Senior Joe Hall had a solid outing for the Pokes as well placing second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:38.43. Hammond finished off his strong meet with a third-place finish in the shot put (58-8).
