LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming track and field teams picked up a pair of individual conference titles Friday on day one of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Freshman Andrea Batt, from Huson, Mont., set a new conference and UW school record in the javelin with a winning throw of 168-8. Batt broke the old record set by Cowgirl Jorah Roylance last season. Senior Jason Gervais captured his fourth conference title as a Cowboy by winning the men's discus with a toss of 196-2 on his last throw of the day. Gervais' mark was nearly ten feet further than the second-place finisher. Teammate Jason Hammond also placed in the discus, finishing fifth with a toss of 164-4. In the overall team standings the Cowgirls sit in fifth-place with 19 points. BYU leads the women's race with 85 points. The Cowboys are in fifth as well with 17 points. Air Force stands first on the men's side after one day of competition with 79 points. "We've had a nice meet so far and I feel we've gotten off to a good start," said UW head coach Don Yentes. "I'm pleased with the way the team is performing." In preliminary action, junior Karal Davis, who was seeded tenth going into the 400-meter dash, finished with the fourth-best time of the day (48.40). Senior Shane Rasby finished seventh in his first long jump competition of the outdoor season (21-5 1/2), however it wasn't enough to qualify him for finals. Cowgirl sophomore Kim Demers turned in the third best time in school history in the 400-meter hurdles, placing fourth in the prelims with a time of 1:00.76. The 2001 MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will conclude on Saturday, May 19.
