BYU Claims Team Titles Cougar women win their 20th straight conference outdoor track & field crown.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY - Brigham Young University won both the men's and women's team titles at the 2002 McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the Cadet Track on the Campus of the United States Air Force Academy. It was the third consecutive team title for both the Cougar men and women's teams. The BYU women continued their dominating ways, winning its 20th straight conference outdoor track & field crown with 193.50 points. Colorado State was second with 147.33 points and San Diego State finished third with 119.33 points. UNLV was fourth (98), followed by Wyoming (95), Utah (75.33), New Mexico (57.50) and Air Force (32). The Cougar men won their fifth straight league crown with a total of 226.50 points, followed by Colorado State in second with 179.50 points and Air Force in third with 147.50 points. New Mexico was fourth (125.50) followed by Wyoming (90) and Utah (33). UNLV's women's team broke three conference records during the meet Saturday. Junior Nickeisha Charles set a new MWC Meet record in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.60, while senior Michelle Davis recorded a new 200-meter dash mark with a time of 23.00. The Rebels 4x400 relay team also set a new meet record with a time of 3:34.72. San Diego State's 4x100 relay team established an all-time league best with a time of 44.24, while Aztec freshman Shayla Ballentine set a new MWC Meet record in the pole vault with a winning mark of 4.00 meters (13-01.50). New Mexico senior Monique Harris broke her own championship mark in the triple jump with a leap of 12.69 meters (41-07.75) and sophomore Loree Smith of Colorado State set a new stadium record in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.68 meters (192-6).
On the men's side, Wyoming junior Seth Billy won the 400-meter hurdles with a meet record time of 50.07. Teammate Quincy Howe captured the triple jump with a leap of 16.58-meters (54-4.75), setting a championship meet and all-time MWC record. Air Force sophomore Sean Temple broke the MWC all-time 110-meter hurdle record after winning the event with a time of 14.12.
The meet's Outstanding Performance award was given to Wyoming's Quincy Howe on the men's side, while there was a three-way tie for the women's award between BYU's Nikki Hughes, Colorado State's Loree Smith and UNLV's Michelle Davis. The other individual awards for the year are listed below.
