SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Brigham Young holds the lead on the women's side and Air Force on the men's following the third day of competition Friday at 2001 Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships held at the Sports Deck on the San Diego State campus.

The Cougar women own first-place with 85 points, Colorado State is in second with 62 and San Diego State rounds out the top three with 43. On the men's side Air Force holds the three day lead with 79 points. Colorado State (57) and Brigham Young (41) close out the top three.

The league crowned six individual champions on the women's side Friday with BYU taking three. The highlight of the day was Elizabeth Jackson's 9:55.63 finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for BYU. That mark is an American and conference meet record. Wyoming's Andrea Batt also posted a conference best throw of 168-8.00 in the javelin.

San Diego State's Aimee Crabtree and Tricia Gutierrez finished 1-2 in the pole vault, both clearing 12-9.00. BYU's Sarah Ellett earned the individual championship in the 10,000 meters with a league meet best time of 35:20.34. Ellett's teammate Kirsten Bolm took the long jump with a leap of 20-10.50. Colorado State's Liz Toman won the discus throw with a meet record toss of 174-4.00.

Five men were honored with championship medals as well. Air Force came away from the day with a pair of wins, with Anthony Park taking the long jump (24-1.00) and Shane Rogers the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:59.44). BYU's Dan Uffens won the javelin with a league meet best throw of 203-1.00 and Wyoming's Jason Gervais the discus (196-2.00). The final winner of the day was New Mexico's Ben Ortega's conference meet record of 30:02.00 in the 10,000 meters.

Tomorrow's championship action gets underway at 10:30 a.m. PDT with the men's hammer throw. The women's hammer starts at noon PDT. The MWC awards ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at the conclusion of all events.

Mountain West Conference NCAA Qualifiers
Fifty Mountain West Conference track student-athletes representing all eight MWC institutions have provisionally or automatically qualified for the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. BYU's Elizabeth Jackson holds the nation's best time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and Colorado State's Bryan Berryhill is the nation's leader in the 1,500 meters. BYU leads the league with 24 individual qualifiers, 12 of which are automatic. Colorado State is next with seven qualifiers, followed by Wyoming with six, SDSU with five and Utah with three.
