LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Cowboy freshman Bret Zowada placed sixth in the decathlon Thursday on day two of the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. Zowada, who was in fourth after the first day of competition, finished the 10-event decathlon with 5,814 points. New Mexico's Mark Johnson claimed the decathlon title by accumulating 6,773 total points.

Zowada's best showing of the day was in the 1500-meter run where he placed second with a time of 4:57.19. In the remaining four events he finished fifith in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.41), he placed sixth in both the pole vault (10-6) and javelin throw (121-1) and seventh in the discus (88-10).

With his sixth-place finish Zowada earned Wyoming's men team three points. Defending conference champion Brigham Young, who had three decathletes compete, leads the men's team standings with 16 points. In the women's competition the University of Utah leads with 15 points after the heptathlon event. The Cowgirls did not have an athlete compete in the heptathlon.

The second day of the decathlon was delayed two hours due to lighting and rain.

Friday most of the field events as well as the qualifying rounds of the track events will get underway.
