SDSU's Frary, CSU's Crumb Win Heptathlon and Decathlon

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State's Aja Frary and Colorado State's Doug Crumb won the heptathlon and decathlon respectively in the second day of the 2001 Mountain West Conference track and field championships held at the SDSU Sports Deck on the San Diego State campus. Frary finished with 5,643 points after top finishes in two of Thursday's three events in the heptathlon, posting a 6.03 meter finish in the long jump and a time of 2:15.20 in the 800 meter. Trailing Frary was Brigham Young's Maret Komarova with 5,146 points. Utah took the next three spots starting with Shanea Nixon at third (5,073) Erianne Allen in fourth (5,018) and Kristy Slade in fifth (5,013). Colorado State's Lindsey Malmgren (4,984), San Diego State's Leslie Miller (4,967) and Air Force's Brittany Edmonds (4,352) rounded out the field. BYU's Kirsten Bolm, who was the leader in the event entering the day, pulled out of the competition with an injury after the long jump competition. In the decathlon, Colorado State's Crumb secured the top spot scoring 6,782 points thanks in part to a top clearance of 13-11.25 in the pole vault. Crumb was followed by Air Force's Kurt Duffy (6,652) and BYU's Dan Parkinson (6,591) who owned the lead entering the day. Air Force's Nick Herald and Tom Clark took the No. 4 and 5 spots with 6,591 and 6,184 points, respectively. Colorado State's Matt Weber (6,045) and Kurt Davies (5,163) closed out the standings. Utah leads in team scoring on the women's side with 15 points, followed by San Diego State with 12 followed BYU (8), Colorado State (3) and Air Force. On the men's side Air Force leads with 17 points. Colorado State is in second with 15 followed by BYU with six.
Friday's competition gets underway at 11 a.m. PDT with the men's javelin the women's javelin follows at 1 p.m. PDT.
