Decathalon and Heptathlon Are In The Book 2002 MWC McLeodUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships continue through Saturday.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY - San Diego State's Leslie Miller won the heptathlon and New Mexico's Mark Johnson won the decathlon at the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Air Force's track Thursday. For Miller, the 5292 points gave her a 133-point margin of victory over Utah senior Erianne Allen who scored 5159 points. Miller's total was her best performance in this championship meet in three years. Last year she placed seventh with 4967 points and fourth two years ago with 4721 points. Allen improved one place after the first day of competition, thanks in part to a first-place finish in the 800-meters (2:22.73), the final event of the day. Teammate Kristy Slade, who held second place after Wednesday's four events, fell to fourth with a total of 4884 points. Milller, who led after the first day of competition with 3196 points, placed third in the long jump (18-feet, 10 ¾-inches) and the javelin throw (116-feet) and fifth in the 800-meters (2:26.29). The Utes scored 15 total points in the event thanks to their second, fourth and seventh place finish. San Diego State was in second place with 10 points followed by New Mexico (7), Colorado State (4) and BYU (3). In the decathlon, Johnson, who led after the first day with 3,555 points finished with 6773 points win by 195 points over Brigham Young's Devin Howe. Johnson finished first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.16) and discus (121-feet, 5-inches) and finished third in the pole vault (14-feet, 5 ¼-inches), javelin (141-feet, 2-inches) and the 1,500-meter run (4:58.70). The men's team scores after the first two days of competition have Brigham Young leading with 16 points as they finished second, third and seventh in the decathlon. New Mexico was in second with 10 points followed by Colorado State (5), Air Force (4) and Wyoming (3).
The competition Thursday was delayed by more than two hours due to lightning and rain.
On Friday, the men's hammer throw begins the proceedings at 10:30 a.m., with most field events starting at 12:00 noon, and the track event qualifying rounds at 1:00 p.m. Friday's competition concludes with the men's and women's 10,000m runs ending at 6:15 p.m. Saturday the women's hammer throw begins at 10:30 a.m., again with most field events beginning at 11:00 am, and the finals in the track events commencing with the 4x100-meter relay at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's competition concludes with the always exciting men's and women's 4x400-meter relays at approximately 4:30 p.m. Admission for the final two days is $6 for adults and $3 for children. |
