2002 MWC McLeodUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Underway UNM's Johnson and SDSU's Miller lead the decathalon and heptathlon, respectively.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - New Mexico's Mark Johnson and San Diego State's Leslie Miller were the multi-event leaders after the first day of competition in the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Air Force's track. Johnson, a sophomore, tallied 3,555 points after the first five events in the decathalon while Miller, a junior, scored 3,196 points in the first four events of the heptathlon. This is only the second decathalon for the Lobos' Johnson and the point total exceeds his best first day total by just over 200 points. Johnson finished first in the long jump (21-feet, 10 ¾-inches) and second in the 100-meters (11.48), shot put (37-feet, 8 ½ -inches) and 400-meters (50.72). He tied for third in the high jump (6-feet, 2 ¼-inches). BYU's Devin Howe, a freshman, is just 29 points behind Johnson with 3,526 points heading into Thursday's final five events. Miller's point total is just six points short of her all-time best for a first-day performance. Her only first place finish of the day came in the 100-meter hurdles with a clocking of 14.29. In second place is Utah's Kristy Slade with 3,041 points. However, Miller, who finished seventh in last year's heptathlon has two of her best events coming up Thursday-the long jump and the 800-meters. She has a personal best of 19-feet, 2-inches in the long jump and a time of 2:18.0 in the 800-meters. The decathlon and heptathlon continue Thursday starting at 11:00 a.m. On Friday, the men's hammer throw begins the proceedings at 10:30 a.m., with most field events starting at 12:00 noon, and the track event qualifying rounds at 1:00 p.m.
Friday's competition concludes with the men's and women's 10,000-meter runs ending at 6:15 p.m. Saturday the women's hammer throw begins at 10:30 a.m., again with most field events beginning at 11:00 am, and the finals in the track events commencing with the 4x100m relay at 1:00 p.m. Saturday's competition concludes with the always exciting men's and women's 4x400m relays at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Admission on Friday and Saturday is $6 for adults and $3 for children. |
