Air Force Men and BYU Women Lead After Day Two at MWC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Air Force's Skylar Morgan and BYU's Amy Menlove capture multi-event crowns

    BYU's Amy Menlove set another track record on her way to capturing the women's heptathlon title at the 2009 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships held in Laramie, Wyo. On the men's side, Air Force's Skylar Morgan brought home the decathlon title.

    Menlove scored a regional-qualifying 5,325 points to win the heptathlon, starting the day with a first-place distance of 20'-5.00" (6.22m) in the long jump event. The performance was her second track record in as many days. She went on to post a mark of 92'-7.00" (28.23m) in the javelin, earning fifth place, and finished with a second-place performance in the 800-meter with a time of 2:24.11.

    TCU's Meaghan Peoples earned runner-up honors, breaking her own school record in the event with 5,060 points to qualify for NCAA regionals. She completed the day crossing the finish line first in the 800-meter in a track-record 2:14.68.

    Kirsten Kugler of Colorado State (4,997) and Mindy Robins of BYU (4,539) finished third and fourth, respectively, while Air Force's Danielle McCarty placed fifth overall with 4,413 points. Colorado State's Sophia Wagner finished in sixth with 4,367 points, while Air Force's Phaelen French posted 3,792 points to earn seventh-place honors. UNLV's Talyah Polee (3,731) and Wyoming's Britney Jackson (3,235) rounded out the scoring at eighth and ninth overall, respectively.

    For the men, Morgan moved up from his fourth place position yesterday to become just the second Falcon in league history to win the decathlon, scoring 6,750 points. He finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.86), discus (124'-10.00" [38.05m]) and pole vault (13'-11.25" [4.25m]) for the first three events of the day on his way to capturing the title. Morgan's teammate Noah Palicia earned runner-up honors with 6,642 points. Palicia impressively placed first in the pole vault with a height of 16'-2.75" (4.95m), as well as the javelin (165'-11.00" [50.57m]) and the 1,500-meter run (4:42.81).

    Brett Birkeland of BYU (6,456) and Jay Petsch of Wyoming (6,453) earned third and fourth overall, respectively. Meelis Kosk finished fifth for the Cougars with a point total of 6,189, while New Mexico's Brian Wilson (6,186) rounded out the scoring to place sixth.

    BYU currently leads the women's field with 15 points, followed by Colorado State (9), TCU (8), Air Force (6) and UNLV (1). On the men's side, Air Force is ahead with 18 points, with BYU trailing at 10. Wyoming (5) and New Mexico (3) finished third and fourth, respectively, heading into day three. Competition continues on Friday, starting with the women's hammer throw at 11 a.m. MT.
