Colorado State's Pearson and BYU's Dalton Lead After Day One Decathlon events begin at 11 a.m. CT, heptathlon starts at 11:30 a.m. CT

Colorado State senior Emily Pearson, who led the league in the heptathlon coming into Wednesday, continued her domination in the event, scoring 3,407 points on the first day of competition of the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Pearson led for most of the day as she placed first overall in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 13.81 seconds. She followed by winning the 200 meters with a time of 24.48 seconds. The La Junta, Colo., native, also tied for first-place in the high jump with a leap of 5'-5.25" (1.66m). New Mexico's Sandy Fortner is in second-place entering tomorrow's action. The junior crushed her personal best mark in the shot put, tossing 46'-0.00" (14.02m) to finish first overall. She continued her dominance in the field events later in the day, winning the high jump with a mark of 5'-5.25" (1.66m) inches. Katie Lloyd of Colorado State (3,219) and Kristin Olafsdottir of San Diego State (3,188) finished third and fourth, respectively, while BYU's Chelsi Petersen (3,039) was fifth. TCU's Meaghan Peoples enters tomorrow's action in sixth-place with 2,969 points and San Diego State's Shana Watson is in seventh with 2,949 points. Kristen Kugler of Colorado State (2,820) and Air Force's Danielle McCarty (2,619) rounded out the scoring at eighth and ninth overall, respectively. BYU freshman Chase Dalton leads the men's decathlon competition after five events with a score of 3,690. Only one point separates him from teammate Justin Palmer, who currently sits in second at 3,689 points. The Cougars occupy the top three positions heading into the second day of the competition with freshman Jordan Calderwood (3,582) sitting in third. Air Force junior Skylar Morgan (3,434) is in fourth, followed by Wyoming's Jay Petsch (3,408) in fifth. Air Force's Matt Gensic (3,291) and Noah Palicia (3,186) are sixth and seventh overall, respectively. Finally, Colorado State's Chad Gibson rounds out the eight competitors with a score of 2,972 points. Dalton, a freshman from Oregon, won the shot put with a toss of 39'-5.25" (12.02m), while also winning the high jump with a leap of 6'-7.00" (2.01m).
