BYU's Amy Menlove and Wyoming's Jay Petsch Lead After Day One of the 2009 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Menlove clocks track record in the 100-meter hurdles
May 13, 2009 LARAMIE, Wyo. - BYU junior Amy Menlove and Wyoming junior Jay Petsch lead the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon, respectively, heading into day two of competition at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Menlove, who recently won the pentathlon competition at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, continued her domination in the multi-events, scoring 3,195 points. The Sandy, Utah, native led for most of the day as she placed first overall in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in track-record 13.60 seconds. She followed by tying for fourth-place in the high jump with a leap of 5'-1.25" (1.56m). Menlove finished the day earning second in the shot put (35'-7.75" [10.86m]) and first in the 200-meter dash (25.03). Colorado State's Kristen Kugler is in second place entering tomorrow's action. The junior won the shot put event with a mark of 40'-0.00" (12.19m) and finished second in the high jump with a height of 5'-6.00" (1.68m). Meaghan Peoples of TCU (2,897) and Danielle McCarty of Air Force (2,795) finished third and fourth, respectively, while BYU's Mindy Robins (2,742) was fifth. Colorado State's Sophia Wagner enters tomorrow's action in sixth-place with 2,643 points and UNLV's Talyah Polee is in seventh with 2,209 points. Phaelen French of Air Force (2,146) and Wyoming's Britney Jackson (2,117) rounded out the scoring at eighth and ninth overall, respectively. Petsch, competing in his first decathlon of the season, finished the day with 3,671 points in a close race for the top three positions. From Mesa, Ariz., Petsch kicked off the day winning the 100-meter dash in a personal-best 11.00 seconds. He placed second in both the long jump (22'-2.25" [6.76m]) and the shot put (36'-11.00" [11.25m]), and finished the day with a first-place performance in the 400-meter dash (50.04). Just 82 points separate Petsch from BYU's Meelis Kosk, who heads into day two with 3,589 points. Kosk won the shot put with a toss of 42'-10.75" (13.07m). Fellow Cougar Brett Birkeland is sitting in third (3,528), while Air Force occupies the next two positions with Skylar Morgan (3,497) and Noah Palicia (3,292) in fourth and fifth place, respectively. New Mexico's Brian Wilson rounds out the top six competitors with a score of 3,236 points. Competition continues Thursday starting with the heptathlon at 12 p.m. MT and the decathlon at 12:30 p.m. MT.
