PROVO, Utah - The BYU men and women swept the team titles for the third straight season at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Clarence F. Robison Track on the campus of BYU, Saturday afternoon. The Cougar men have now won seven straight outdoor championships, while the BYU women won their sixth MWC title in seven years.
On the men's side, the Cougars scored 248 points, followed by second-place Colorado State (178 points). TCU finished third in their first-ever MWC Outdoor Track Championships with 143 points, with Air Force (fourth, 96 points), New Mexico (fifth, 79 points) and Wyoming (sixth, 69 points) rounding out the men's field. Colorado State's Kevin Johnson was honored as the men's high point award winner (26 points), TCU's Otis McDaniel earned the Outstanding Performance Award, breaking the all-time MWC record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.35, BYU's Chris Carter was awarded the Freshman of the Year award and Cougars' head coach Mark Robison was named men's Coach of the Year.
For the women, BYU scored 183 points, Colorado State was second with 150.50 points, TCU was third with 144 points and San Diego State finished fourth with 121 points, while New Mexico finished fifth (67.50 points), Utah finished sixth with 65 points, Wyoming finished seventh with 43 points, Air Force finished eighth with 29 points and UNLV finished ninth with 16 points. San Diego State's Kristin Olafsdottir earned the High Point Award (26 points) and was named Freshman of the Year, while Air Force's Dana Pounds garnered the Outstanding Performance Award accolades with her all-time conference best javelin throw of 195'-8.00" (59.64m) and Colorado State's Del Hessel was named women's Coach of the Year.
MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championship notes:
Colorado State senior Matt McKinney won the men's shot put with a mark of 59'-9.75" (18.23m). McKinney also finished second in yesterday's men's discus.
The TCU Horned Frogs swept the men's and women's 4x100 relay. The Lady Frogs set a new MWC Championship record with a time of 44.23, while the men won in a NCAA regional qualifying time of 39.52. The TCU women also hold the all-time conference mark (43.93), which set earlier this season.
Calandra Stewart of TCU won the women's 1,500 meters in a time of 4:34.40. BYU's Amy Fowler (4:34.86), Colorado State's Danielle Korb (4:35.63), Laura Taylor of BYU (4:36.86) and San Diego State's Celeste Tyson (4:37.30) rounded out the top-five.
BYU freshman Kyle Perry won the men's 1,500 meters in a time of 3:46.81, a NCAA regional-qualifying time. All four Cougars in the race finished in the top-five (2nd - Josh McAdams, 4th - Tyrel Jensen, 5th - Dustin Bybee). TCU's Kip Kangogo crossed the finish line third.
Air Force senior Dana Pounds won her third consecutive women's javelin crown, breaking her own MWC all-time and MWC Championship record with a mark of 195'-8.00" (59.64m).
BYU's Chris Reno captured the individual title in the men's javelin with a MWC Championship record mark of 222'-3.00" (67.74m).
BYU senior Nate Rencher won the men's 110-meter hurdles in a NCAA regional qualifying time of 14.19. The Cougars' Benjamin Gardner and Jacob Garlick finished fourth (14.32) and fifth, respectively. Colorado State's Mike Horton (second, 14.24) and Justin Hazzard (third, 14.27) rounded out the top five.
TCU freshman Kishelle Paul won the women's 100-meter hurdles with a NCAA regional qualifying time of 13.79.
San Diego State's Erin Asay won the women's pole vault with a height of 13'-5.25" (4.10m), regionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the process.
TCU's Nathandra John claimed the women's 400-meter dash title with a time of 52.31.
TCU's Lewis Banda and Che Chavez finished 1-2 in the men's 400-meter dash. For the second straight day, Banda broke his own all-time MWC mark, finishing the championship in 45.90. Chavez crossed the finish line in a regional qualifying time of 46.46.

Virgil Hodge of TCU swept the women's 100- and 200-meter titles, setting new MWC meet records in both events. She ran a time of 11.24 in the 100 and 22.89 in the 200.
The Horned Frogs' Otis McDaniel won the men's 100- and 200-meter crowns, with times of 10.29 and 20.35, respectively. His time in the 200 broke Colorado State's John Woods' all-time conference mark which was set in 2001.
TCU's Johnathan Jackson won the men's triple jump with a leap of 49'-11.75" (15.23m).
Colorado State's Amanda Miller won the women's triple jump title with a mark of 41'-6.00" (12.65m). Miller became the first triple jumper in CSU history - either male of female - to win a triple jump title, tying her own school record in the process.
TCU freshman Candis Kelley won the women's shot put with a toss of 50'-6.25" (15.40m).
BYU freshman Chris Carter and San Diego State freshman Kristin Olafsdottir won the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles titles. Carter turned in an all-time MWC and conference championship time of 49.67, while Olafsdottir crossed the finish line in 59.33.
Wyoming's Mark Korir won the men's 5,000-meter race in a regional qualifying time of 14:19.48.
BYU's Chelsea McKell won her second distance title of the championship, winning the women's 5,000-meter run in 17:01.99. McKell also won the women's 10,000-meter race on Friday night.
