FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Dan Feltman of New Mexico won the men's decathlon with 7,250 points, while Colorado State's Katie Lloyd won the women's heptathlon with 5,141 points at the 2005 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Thursday at Colorado State University's Jack Christiansen Track.

In the men's competition, Brian Walsh of Air Force was second with 6,716 points, Devin Howe of BYU was third with 6,635 points, Derek McDonald of New Mexico was fourth with 6,580 points and Chris Weirich of BYU was fifth with 6,515 points.

Feltman was also the leader after day one and had a 600-plus point lead heading into the final event, the 1,500 meters. He finished with a time of 4:57.09 for 577 points and the overall victory. He was second in the field in the discus throw, second in the pole vault and second in the javelin.

In the women's heptathlon, BYU's Liis Berendsen finished second with 5,056 points, San Diego State's Janine Polischuk was third with 5,050 points, Colorado State's Cristina Gourdin finished fourth with 4,985 points and Christine Spence of UNLV was fifth with 4,956 points. Berendsen was in third place going into the final event, the 800 meters, but she ran a field-best 2:17.10 to earn 863 points and edge Polischuk by just six points.

Lloyd took the overall lead following the javelin throw, the second event of the day. Lloyd earned 611 points in the javelin as she threw 121'6", while first-day leader Christine Spence of UNLV earned 215 points with a throw of 53'-2" to fall to fourth place going into the 800 meters. Colorado State finished first, fourth, seventh and eighth overall and earned 18 team points.

The rest of the field gets underway tomorrow as the field events start at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer and the running events begin at 1:30 p.m. with the women's steeplechase.
