CSU's Kevin Johnson And Katie Lloyd Win Decathlon And Heptathlon At MWC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

PROVO, Utah - Kevin Johnson of Colorado State won the men's decathlon with 7,151 points, while the Rams' Katie Lloyd won her second straight women's heptathlon with 5,418 points at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Thursday at BYU's Clarence F. Robison Track.

For the men, BYU's Devin Howe was second with 7,113 points, Air Force's Brian Walsh (6,940 points) and Joel Nolan (6,486 points) finished third and fourth, respectively, while Wyoming's Phillip Thomas finished fifth (6,485 points).

Johnson, the leader after day one, had a slight advantage going into the last event of the decathlon, the 1,500 meter run. He finished with a time of 5:01.30, scoring 552 points to secure the overall title. He won the 110 meter hurdles and the discus throw, while finishing second in the pole vault on his final day of competition.

In the women's heptathlon, San Diego State's Kristin Olafsdottir finished second with 5,402 points, Utah's Amanda Feigt finished third with 5,195 points, Colorado State's Emily Pearson finished fourth with 5,194 points and New Mexico's Sandy Fortner was fifth with 5,190 points. Lloyd took the overall lead following the long jump, the first event of the day. She earned 813 points with a mark of 19'-3.50" (5.88m), while first-day leader Kristin Olafsdottir earned 765 points with a jump of 18'-9.25" (5.72m) to fall to second place. Overall, Lloyd won three individual events in this year's competition (the high jump, shot put and long jump).

Air Force is leads the men's field with 14 points, with BYU second (11 points), Colorado State third (10 points) and Wyoming fourth (four points). Colorado State leads the women's field after day two with 18 points, followed by San Diego State (eight points), Utah (six points), New Mexico (four points) and BYU (three points).

The rest of the field gets underway on Friday as the field events start at 11 a.m. MT with the women's hammer throw. The women's steeplechase kicks off Friday's running events at 1:30 p.m. MT.
