Track and Field Teams Have Solid Showings At Nebraska Quadrangular Sophomore Kima Wells sets a school record in the 400-meter dash.
May 7, 2001
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Another week and another Wyoming track and field record falls. Cowgirl sophomore Kima Wells continued UW's assault at the school record books by setting a new school record in the 400-meter dash at the Nebraska Quadrangular in Lincoln, Neb. Wells, a graduate of Star Valley High School in Afton, Wyo., placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.2, breaking the previous school record of 55.71 set in 1980. As a team, both the Cowboys and the Cowgirls placed third out of four schools. Wyoming competed against Big Twelve Conference schools Nebraska, Kansas State and Kansas. Host Nebraska won both the women's and men's team standings. "We had some nice performances today, it was a good meet for us," said Wyoming head coach Don Yentes. "We had a number of personal best performances and a number of athletes improve on their season best times and marks which is great to see as we prepare for the conference championships in a couple of weeks." Wyoming athletes won nine individual events at the meet with the Cowgirls winning five events and the Cowboys winning four. Senior Jason Hammond had the most impressive performance for the Pokes by winning the hammer with a toss of 211-9. His mark set a new record at the Ed Weir Outdoor Track Stadium. Hammond also placed second in the shot put. Junior Karal Davis picked up his first victory of the season in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.6. Senior Joe Hall won the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:35.7 and senior Jason Gervais won the discus with a throw of 185-3 to round out the first place finishers for the Pokes. Two Cowgirls, Stephanie Hanks and Leslie Jackson, made UW track and field history by being the first women ever at Wyoming to compete and finish the 3000-meter steeplechase. Hanks placed fourth out of five to set a school record in that event with a time of 11:53.2. Joining Wells in the winners circle for the Cowgirls were junior sprinter Fiona Lindo-Jeffrey in the 200-meter dash (24.1), sophomore Kim Demers in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:02.3), junior Julie Thomas in the hammer (185-10) and freshman Andrea Batt in the javelin (157-1). Only four Wyoming athletes, Hammond, Gervais, senior Derek Woodske and sophomore Seth Billy will travel to Modesto, Calif., for the Modesto Relays May 12. The rest of the Cowboys and Cowgirls will train for the MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 16-19 in San Diego, Calif.
