FORT COLLINS, COLO. - The Colorado State track and field team split into thirds this weekend. A majority of the team was in Greeley for the Cowtown Classic, while selected members headed south to the Texas Invitational and a portion of the distance squads headed to the Stanford Invitational and ran on Friday evening.

At the Cowtown Classic, Heather Urbanoski finished second in the 100 meters, behind Candace Lelo, competing unattached. The Rams then took third through seventh in the 200 meters, with Sarah Niemann leading the pack at 25.06. Siobhan Everson-Stewart and Niemann placed second and third in the 400 meters, both with season best times. Christy Virgin was a double winner for the Rams, taking top honors in both the 800 meters and the 1500 meters, while Kim Leal was second in the 3000 meters and Marisa Keefe was fourth. In the 100 meter hurdles, Cristina Gourdin was second, while Zuzana Krajciova and Sean McMurry were first and second in the 400 meter hurdles. All three high jumpers, Jill Ferguson, Julie O,ÄôBryan and Kat Cirone placed fourth in the high jump after clearing 5-2.25. Christine Ahn and Shay Horak were second and third in the pole vault and Gourdin won the long jump with a huge personal best of 17-11, breaking her old personal best by over a foot. Amanda Huddleston, Bryan and Cirone swept the top three spots in the triple jump. Meggan Shields won the shot put, was second in the discus and hammer, while Melissa Harms won the hammer, was third in the shot put and fourth in the discus and Gourdin was third in the javelin throw. On the men,Äôs side Sherown Campbell and Brian Williams took the top two spots in the 400 meters, while Chris Clarke and Ryan Lowen placed second and third in the 800 meters. Paul DiGrappa won the 3000 meters and Tom Waido was a double winner in the 110 and 400 meter hurdles. Waido narrowly missed the provisional qualifying time in the 400 hurdles, running a personal best 51.66 and the qualifying time is 51.20. Jacob Benson cleared 6-9.75 in the high jump to win and he won the triple jump with a personal best 48-6.25, while he placed second in the long jump after leaping 22-2. James Cale, Adam Trainor and Jason Fearheiley were second, third and fifth in the hammer and the Rams swept the top four spots in the javelin with Chris Ahlgrim leading the pack with a throw of 189-10.

 

 

At the Texas Invitational, Julie Gunzel and Keela Niemeyer placed second and fifth in the discus, while in the hammer, Hannah Metzler was second, Gunzel was third and Niemeyer was fifth. Metzler and Niemeyer then took the top two spots in the shot put and Gunzel was fourth. John Woods recorded a personal best 21.04 in the 200 meters to place fourth in his head and fourth overall, while Chris Riggs was second in his heat with a season best 21.69. Jeremy Graff was third overall in the shot put with a throw of 56-1.75 and the men,Äôs 4x100 meter relay team of Thal Woods, Riggs, Sean Ingram and John Woods was third overall with a time of 40.45.

On Friday evening, several members of the team provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship. Rob Vermillion finished 12th overall and was the seventh collegian with a time of 3:44.85 while Meg Larson won the steeplechase with a time of 10:16.67 in just her second race of the year. Elizabeth Roodell improved her provisional time in the 5000 meters to 16:29.82 and placed 15th overall and 10th among collegians and Mary Ridder was 10th overall and the sixth collegian to finish in the 800 meters, doing so with a provisional time of 2:06.80. Bill Michel placed ninth in the 5000 meters after running a 14:20.58 and Josh Lybarger was 14th in the same race with a time of 14:25.00. In the men's steeplechase, Raegan Robb was eighth after clocking in at 9:08.03.

Most of the team will take next week off in preparation for the Mountain West Conference Championship the following week. A few members of the team will head to the Air Force Academy Twilight Meet.
