CSU Men Second, Women Fourth at Ward Haylett
Drew Loftin breaks school hammer record.

LINCOLN, Neb. - Senior Drew Loftin broke the school record in the hammer throw and established the best throw in the nation this season, collegiately, breaking the stadium record with his throw of 227-4. It also the eighth best throw by an American this season, according to USA Track & Field. Senior Meg Larson won the women's steeplechase for the Rams, breaking the stadium record after clocking in at 10:37.08. She breaks the previous record of 10:39.74 from 2001.
The men's sprinters fared very well at the meet, with both senior
Chris Riggs and junior John Woods regionally qualifying in both the 100
and 200 meters. Woods finished third in the 100 meters with a time of
10.45, while Riggs ran a 10.64. In the 200, Riggs was third with a time
of 20.90, while Woods recorded a 21.06. Brian Kelly regionally
qualified in the 800 meters after crossing the tape in 1:51.10 and Mike
Nicks qualified in the 1500 meters after winning the event in 3:48.10.
He led a trio of Rams across the finish line as brothers Bill and Paul
Michel were second and third, respectively. Raegan Robb won the men's
5000 meters with a time of 14:31.68, while Josh Glaab was right behind
him in 14:34.59. Both junior Tom Waido and freshman Justin Hazzard
regionally qualified in the 400 hurdles after finishing second and
third, respectively in 52.17 and 52.51. The men's 4x400 meter relay
also regionally qualified after combining for a time of 3:11.20. Senior
Brian Trainor was second in the discus with a throw of 197-0, for his
best of the season. Loftin was third with a toss of 188-2 and freshman
Nate Heyrman threw a personal best 177-7 to move up on the regional
charts. Jason Fearheiley also regionally qualified with his throw of
166-2 in the discus. Behind Loftin in the men's hammer were Adam
Trainor in third and James Cale, throwing a personal best 186-6 in fourth.
For the women, Katie Yemm won the 1500 meters with a regional qualifying time of 4:29.38, while Kim Watson was third wit ha time of 4:33.16. Katrice Thomas continued to dominate in the sprints, running a season-best 24.18 in the 200 meters. Crystal Clark was second in the 5000 meters with a time of 17:10.51 and Zuzana Krajciova regionally qualified in the 100 meter hurdles after finishing second in 1:01.37. In the shot put, Keela Niemeyer improved her rankings regionally with a toss of 48-6 and Jill McCormick qualified for the first time with a throw of 45-9. Freshmen Haley Hunt and Katie Hansen both had career highs this afternoon. Hunt threw 175-8 in the hammer, while Hansen finished third in the discus with a toss of 155-0. Colorado State will head south next Saturday to compete in the Air Force Twilight Meet before heading to the Mountain West Conference Championship in Albuquerque on May 14-17. |
