Cowgirl Relay Team Sets New School Record At Jack Christiansen Invite Cowboys and Cowgirls win a combined nine events.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - A new school record was established by members of the Wyoming Cowgirl 4x100-meter relay team Saturday at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Ft. Collins, Colo. The relay team of Fiona Lindo-Jeffrey, Kima Wells, Kelly Ann Charles and Misha Piper ran a winning time of 46.05 in the 4x100-meter relay event which eclipsed the old record of 46.10 set last season. As a team the Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls won a combined seven individual and two relay events at the invitational. Sophomore Seth Billy just missed provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a winning and season best time of 51.35. Wyoming's men dominated the throwing events winning three of the four disciplines. Senior Derek Woodske took first in the hammer with a toss of 203-00, senior Jason Hammond won the shot put with a throw of 57-11 and senior Jason Gervais placed first in the discus with a mark of 192-11. Gervais also finished second to Hammond in the shot put. The Cowgirls' three individual victories came from its talented group of underclassmen. Sophomore Kelly Ann Charles won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.22 seconds. Sophomore Kim Demers made it a sweep of the hurdle events for the Cowgirls with her first place finish in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:01.80). Freshman Andrea Batt continued her solid rookie season with a victory in the javelin with a toss of 150-4. The Wyoming women also won the 4x400-meter relay, making it a clean sweep of the relay events. Other solid performances for the Cowgirls were given by junior Julie Thomas (second in the hammer), senior Davina Strauss (second in the long jump) and sophomore Lisa Throener who jumped a season best 5-5 in the high jump placing her second in the event. "Overall it was a good day for the team," said Wyoming head coach Don Yentes. "We had some hits and some misses today. The weather was pretty warm for what we are used to and I thought that took a toll on some of our athletes." The Cowboy and Cowgirl track and field teams return to competition Saturday, May 5, in Lincoln, Neb., at the Nebraska Quadrangular.
