April 22, 2002
WALNUT, Calif. - The University of New Mexico track and field team wrapped up its California road trip with several strong performances on the fourth and final day of the Mt. San Antonio College Relays. Senior Monique Harris paced the team, following up her long jump victory on Saturday with a fourth place finish in the invitational triple jump competition on Sunday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. Harris recorded a season-best mark of 41-05.75 to finish fourth, just 2.75 inches out of third, in the invitational section of the triple jump. After not competing in the triple jump in the first two meets of the outdoor season, Harris has bettered her season-best in the event in each of her last three meets. The Cerritos, Calif. native earned her third long jump victory of the season with a season-best leap of 19- 06.75 in the university section on Saturday. Elsewhere on Sunday, junior Arline Smith recorded a season-best time of 24.26 in the 200 meters to finish third in her heat. Fellow junior David Lloyd clocked a time of 51.17 in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing fifth in his heat, but second among collegiate competitors. On Saturday, Smith recorded a season-best of 56.21 to place sixth in her 400-meter heat. Later that night, sophomore Chris Orrell ran a 3:52.88 in the 1,500 meters to place 14th in his section. Freshman Cameron Clarke had a strong 1,500-meter race as well, running a 3:53.35 to finish 9th in his heat.
The Lobos return to Albuquerque next Saturday, April 27, for their home
finale, the annual Don Kirby Memorial Invitational. The meet gets
underway at 1:30 p.m. at the Great Friends of UNM Track Stadium.
