BYU'S Amy Menlove Wins MWC Pentathlon Title

Menlove scored a Mountain West Conference championship and indoor record 4,172 points to win the women's pentathlon.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - BYU's Amy Menlove scored a Mountain West Conference championship and indoor record 4,172 points to win the women's pentathlon at the 2005 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championship, Thursday afternoon at Cadet Field House.

In addition, the 4,172 points is a NCAA automatic qualifying mark and a Cadet Field House record. Menlove, a sophomore, scored over 1,000 points in two separate events as she tallied 1,028 points in the 60-meter hurdles and 1,007 points in the long jump. Her long jump of 21'-4" was also a Mountain West indoor and championship record and a NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

Christine Spence of UNLV finished second with 3,958 points, while Liis Berendsen of BYU finished third with 3,938 points.

In the men's heptathlon, Caleb Pelger of Air Force holds the lead after the first day with 2,988 points, while Kevin Johnson of Colorado State is second and Bret Zowada of Wyoming is third.

After the first day of competition, BYU leads the women's team competition with 20 points, while UNLV and Colorado State each have eight points. Air Force is fourth with three points.

Day two of the MWC championship begins Friday at noon with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles.
