ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Katie Lloyd became the first Colorado State woman to win the Mountain West Conference pentathlon title, holding on to defeat Utah's Amanda Feight 3,898-3,880 this afternoon on the first day of the MWC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center. San Diego State freshman Kristin Olafsdottir finished third with a score 3,840 - a record in her native Iceland.

Colorado State has an early lead in the women's team standings with 16 points, followed by BYU (9), Utah (8) and San Diego State (6).

Lloyd, the 2005 MWC Outdoor heptathlon champion, never trailed after winning the second event of the day, the high jump, with a leap of 5-06.00. She also finished second in both the shot put (39-07.25) and long jump (18-11.75), then withstood a strong charge from Feight and Olafsdottir in the 800 to take the 18-point victory. Lloyd broke a 26-year-old CSU record in the event as each of the top three finishers surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the pentathlon.

Liis Berendsen (3,620) and JennaBree Tollestrup (3,587) of BYU finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while CSU's Emily Pearson was sixth (3,577). The Rams' Ashleigh Morton (7th - 3,492) and Tonya Cure (8th - 3,385) rounded out the scoring.

Wyoming junior Olav Roe leads the men's heptathlon competition after four events with a score of 3,023. The top four competitors are separated by just 25 points. New Mexico's Dan Feltman, the 2005 MWC Outdoor decathlon champion, is second with 3,002 points, followed by top-seeded Brian Walsh (3,001) of Air Force and Kevin Johnson of Colorado State (2,998). BYU's Meelis Kosk is fifth with 2,878 points and Phillip Thomas of Wyoming is sixth with a score of 2,833.

Roe won the shot put with a mark of 46-07.25 (741 points) and tied for second in the high jump (6-04.25 - 749 points) to take the lead. The heptathlon wraps up tomorrow with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run. The first event of the heptathlon begins at 10 a.m.
