BYU Travels to Speedo Cup
Men enter meet 4-1, women 6-5.
Nov. 19, 2003 PROVO, Utah - The BYU women's and No. 19 men's swimming and diving teams will be traveling to Long Beach, Calif. to compete in the Speedo Cup hosted by UC-Irvine Nov. 20-22. Twenty-three schools and a number of unattached swimmers will be competing in the meet for a total of 212 men and 350 women. Two of the top-five men's and women's teams, Stanford and USC, will provide strong competition for the Cougars, but men's coach Tim Powers said the strong competition will help his young team when it competes in the MWC championships later this season. "The make up of the competition is a three-day, trial-final that mimics the conference championships," Powers said. "That's why we like to go because it will give our younger swimmers experience in that environment." Powers also said this is one of the best competitions in the country and it will be a good measuring stick for where his team stands. On the women's side coach Stan Crump said he was looking forward to see how Colorado State swims because they are the favorite to win the MWC. "We'll have about five days rest going into the meet," Crump said. "We know it will be a tough meet, Santa Barbara has already beaten us in the Big West Shootout, and Oregon State looks to be the toughest team on paper."
The men's team is currently 4-1 in dual meet competition with its only loss coming to Iowa last week in South Bend, Ind. While the women's team is 6-5 and hasn't swam since it defeated San Diego State on Nov. 8.
