Nov. 10, 1999

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UNLV’s Lorena Diaconescu and BYU’s Rachelle Smith were named the Mountain West Conference’s Women’s Swimmer and Diver of the week, respectively.

Competing at the Big West Shootout in Irvine, Calif., Nov. 5-6, Diaconescu, a sophomore from Bucharest, Romania, captured five different first-place finishes as the Rebels defeated UC-Irvine, Northern Arizona, New Mexico State and Cal Poly. This past weekend, Diaconescu posted the top two times in the conference this season in both the 100 Free and 200 Free. Her time of 51.00 in the 100 and 1:50.07 in the 200 are the fastest times this year by a MWC swimmer. Her time of 4:55.17 in the 500 Free was also good for first-place in the event and is the fastest in the league as well.

Smith, a senior from West Valley City, Utah, captured first place in the 3-Meter Diving competition against Utah, Nov. 5. Smith’s score of 205.60 was nearly 15 points ahead of her next competitor as the Cougars captured the dual meet against the Utes by a score of 148-88.
