LAS VEGAS - Swimming coach Jim Reitz has seen just about everything during his 22-year career at UNLV, so he tries never to get too excited early in the season.

But Reitz admitted he is optimistic about the prospects for his men's and women's teams.

The men (5-1) won the Big West Shootout last week in Irvine, Calif., gaining wins over UC Irvine, Cal Poly, Cal State-Northridge and Denver. The women (2-3) beat UC Santa Barbara, but lost to Pacific and Wisconsin.

While the men's team is young, it shows the potential to be a Mountain West Conference contender within the next year or two. But the women appear capable of winning the league this season.
