MWC Men's Swimmer And Diver Of The Week UNLV's Johan Claar and Utah's Sterling Richards pick up weekly honor.
Nov. 2, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Johan Claar and Utah's Sterling Richards have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively. Claar garners his first weekly honor, while Richards picks up his fourth weekly accolade. Claar, a freshman from Bankeryd, Sweden, gathered two first-place and one second-place finish in a dual meet win over No. 25 Arizona State, 121-120. In his first event, Claar held off ASU's Lucas Azevedo by just 0.19 seconds in the 1000 freestyle, winning in a time of 9:22.60. The 9:22.60 marks the second-fastest time in MWC history and the fourth-fastest swim in UNLV history. He placed second in the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:52.39 and, just three events later, won the 500 free by almost four seconds, again over Azevedo, with a time of 4:31.45. A Salt Lake City, Utah, native, Richards claimed both diving titles in a dual meet win over UC San Diego on Oct. 29. The senior scored 299.17 points on the 1-meter board and 329.02 points on the 3-meter board. Both point totals are the top marks in the MWC this season.
