BYU's Tan And Russell Sweep MWC Men's Swimmer And Diver of the Week Honors Tan captured 200-meter backstroke and individual medley against Utah.
Nov. 2, 2000 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Brigham Young University sophomores Gary Tan and Aaron Russell have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men's swimmer and diver of the week, respectively. Against conference rival Utah, Oct. 27, Tan won his individual events, the 200-meter backstroke and individual medley, and was a member of the winning 400-meter medley relay team. In the 200-meter individual medley, his time of 1:52.25 was over four seconds faster than the second place finisher, while his time of 1:50.20 in the 200-meter backstroke was over seven seconds faster than the next finisher. The Maryland Park, Singapore native sits atop the best times in the conference in both events. Russell, a native of Provo, Utah, took first on the 3-meter springboard and second on the 1-meter competition against Utah. He narrowly missed the 1st-place finish on the 1-meter board by three points, but dominated the competition on the 3-meter by over 21 points. Coming Up: The Cougars are off until Nov. 25 where they host UNLV.
Other MWC Schools in action this week: Air Force heads to the Big West Shootout, Nov. 3 and 4 in Irvine, Calif. and Wyoming hosts Metro State, Nov. 4.
