Utah's Sweny And New Mexico's Barras Earn MWC Women's Swimmer And Diver of the Week Accolades Both garner honor for the first time in their career.
Oct. 31, 2001 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah freshman Loren Sweny and New Mexico freshman Becca Barras have been named Mountain West Conference women's swimmer and diver of the week, respectively. Sweny, a native of Manotick, Canada, won the only two events she competed on Friday Oct. 26 in a dual meet against Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. She won the 200-yard backstroke in a school record 2:05.27, and the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.16, about one and a half seconds off the Utah school record. Barras won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events in a dual meet against Northern Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 27 in Flagstaff, Ariz. On the 3-meter springboard, Barras posted a score of 278.78 which qualifies her for the NCAA Diving Zones in Federal Way, Wash. On the 1-meter springboard, she compiled a score of 252.08, falling three points shy of qualifying for the Zones in that event. The Utah women return to the pool on Friday, November 2 as they host BYU in a dual meet at the Ute Natatorium, while New Mexico will spend the weekend in San Diego, Calif. The Lobos swim against San Diego State on Friday, November 2 and then compete against the University of San Diego on Saturday, November 3.
This week in the MWC: The Air Force Academy travels to Irvine, Calif., to compete in the UC Irvine Dual Shoot-Out Saturday and Sunday, November 3 and 4. Utah hosts BYU in a dual meet Friday November 2, while on Saturday, November 3, UNLV plays host to the University of Toronto and Wyoming welcomes South Dakota to Corbett Pool.
