Olympic Trials Abound for Utah Swimmer

SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah swimmer Jonathan Larsen has earned the right to tryout for the 2008 Olympics after qualifying at the Speedo Champions Series in Seattle, Wash., this week.

"Qualifying for the US Olympic trials is incredible," noted Utah head coach Michael Litzinger. "It's the most elite meet in the country. Jonathan is progressing as an athlete and an individual and we are looking forward to him coming back in the fall and having the best year of his career."

Swimming for the Cottonwood Heights Aquatic Team this summer, Larsen swam a 23.49 on his leg of the 4x50m freestyle relay. His time qualified him to tryout for the US Olympic team that will compete in Beijing, China, in 2008. While Larsen's split was the best on his relay squad, the rest of the team faired well too. Also swimming with Larsen were fellow Utes David Maasberg (23.52), Matthew Bailey (23.88) and Nick Philpot (24.45). The relay team turned in a time of 1:35.34.

Larsen, is the first Ute to qualify for the Olympic trials since All-American Heidi Hausknecht tried out for the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia.
