FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU women’s swimmer Maria Paula Alvarez garnered five gold medals at the FECNA Colombian Nationals this week in Pereira, Colombia.
Alvarez, a native of Cali, Colombia, finished ahead of the field in the 200- (2:06.08), 400- (4:30.18), 800- (9:13.51), 1500-free (17.48.12), while also leading off the winning 800-free relay (8.42.79) squad.
As a sophomore in the 2008-09 season, Alvarez set new Horned Frog program records in the 1000- (10:02.64) and 1650-free (16:43.68) events, while also serving on the top 800-free relay (7:20.69) in school history. She claimed the silver medal in the 1650-free and the bronze as a member of the 800-free relay at the MWC Championships. Alvarez finished her sophomore campaign tied with freshman Ashley Bolin for the team-lead in event wins (17).
