Karmondy Earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
May 5, 2006 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force senior Matt Karmondy earned one of 58 NCAA postgraduate scholarships for student-athletes who participated in winter sports. Karmondy will graduate with a 3.83 grade-point average and a degree in aeronautical engineering.
Karmondy was the team captain of the Falcon men's swimming & diving team in 2005-06, earning the Mountain West Conference senior recognition award. A three-time academic all-conference selection, Karmondy was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division Men's At-Large All-District VII team as a junior. He is also a two-time MWC Scholar-Athlete. The Colorado Springs native ranks fifth all-time at the Academy in the 1,000 and 1,650 yard freestyle events.
Karmondy will attend MIT for the next two years to get his master's degree in aeronautical engineering then attend pilot training.
The NCAA has awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships of $7,500 each to 29 male student-athletes and 29 female student-athletes who participated in winter sports. Swimmers claimed eighteen of the 58 awards with the remaining awards going to other winter sports including basketball, fencing, skiing, gymnastics, hockey, indoor track & field, swimming and the emerging women's sports of archery, squash, synchronized swimming and team handball.
In addition to the winter sport honorees, the NCAA also awards 118 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes participating in fall and spring sports in which the NCAA conducts championships or participates in as an emerging sport, for a total of 174 postgraduate scholarships annually.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
